Apparently TV Sets Still Dominate Video Entertainment, Accounting for More Than 50% of all Video Consumed

New research came out from Parks Associates that finds TV sets still dominate home entertainment, accounting for over one-half of all video consumed by US broadband households each week. Plus 360 View: Digital Media and Connected Consumers reveals consumers report spending on average nearly 20 hours per week watching video on a TV, compared to nearly four hours on a mobile phone. Consumers also increased the total amount of time spent watching video from 2018 to 2019, a 33% increase in hours spent per week in video viewing.

This doesn’t surprise me much as TVs are becoming less expensive to buy. People now can buy a 55inch, 4K, smart TV for less than $500. By having a smart TV at home, you can basically do everything a phone can.

“Understanding consumers is key to driving acquisition and minimizing churn among video services,” said Steve Nason, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates. “Different demographics show markedly different attitudes and preferences. NPS scores for Netflix are higher among women, while NPS scores for premium OTT services such as Starz, Showtime, and HBO Now are higher among men. Younger video consumers represent the future of the industry, but their programming and platform preferences are distinct from older segments, which puts traditional pay-TV providers in a difficult position. Changing the traditional pay-TV service model could alienate older, high-ARPU customers, but not changing could doom future prospects.”

The research also found that consumers ages 18-24 watch as much video on a computer as they do on a TV set (approximately 16 hours per week). One-half of US broadband households subscribe to Netflix. Amazon Prime Video is a distant second with a 38% adoption rate. One-fifth of broadband households use the free version of streaming music service Pandora and Consumers 18-34 spend nearly five hours per week listening to podcasts.

AMC’s ‘Into The Badlands’ Gets Snubbed Of An Emmy Nomination

When it comes to stunt work on television one of the best shows on TV is AMC’s Into The Badlands. So it was a real surprise to see that the show was snubbed for their stunt work from this year’s Emmy Nominations that was announced today.

For those who don’t know what the show is about, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic world about 500 years after a war that left civilization in ruins. Many elements of technology, such as electricity and ground vehicles, have survived but society shuns guns, leading to a reliance on melee weaponry like swords, spears, and others like cross-bows.

The idea behind the show was for AMC to produce a compelling character drama and introduce the highest caliber of martial arts to a weekly and ongoing series. The quality of their martial arts athleticism and stunts rivaled only films like The Matrix trilogy, The Raid, and Kill Bill. Because of that many of the show’s stars weren’t terribly happy about being snubbed.

The series started small with only six episodes the first season, then 10 episode the next. But as the popularity of the show slowly rose it was given an order for 16 episodes for their current season that recently ended.

Lead actor Daniel Wu, who plays Sunny on the show, tweeted after the Emmy nominations were announced;

While on Twitter he responded to ONEEYEDgeek.

Actor Lewis Tan, who plays Gaius Chau on the show, tweeted his frustration about the snub as well.

Actor Sherman Augustus who plays Nathaniel Moon on the show, also tweeted about the snub.

Below is a list of who the Emmy committee nominated for stunts this year.

Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Drama Series, Limited Series Or Movie

The Blacklist – NBC
Davis Entertainment and Universal Television in association with Sony Pictures Television
Cort L Hessler III, Stunt Coordinator

Blindspot – NBC
Berlanti Productions and Quinn’s House, Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television
Christopher Place, Stunt Coordinator

Game Of Thrones – HBO
HBO Entertainment in association with Bighead, Littlehead; 360 Television/Startling Television
Rowley Irlam, Stunt Coordinator

Marvel’s The Punisher – Netflix
Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios
Thom Williams, Stunt Coordinator

Westworld – HBO
HBO Entertainment in association with Kilter Films, Bad Robot, Warner Bros. Television
Doug Coleman, Stunt Coordinator
Brian Machleit, Stunt Coordinator

Some might argue that AMC isn’t doing enough for the show as they put a lot of marketing money into the Walking Dead franchises they currently produce. But with rating declining rapidly, that could change and Into The Badlands could see it go in their favor. But only time will tell.

Marvel’s Luke Cage Season 2 Original Soundtrack Album Release On June 22

Marvel is set to release the digital soundtrack for the second season of the Netflix original series “Marvel’s Luke Cage” on June 22, 2018. The album coincides with the release of the second season of the hit series on the same day and features an original score by returning composers Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Adrian Younge (Ghostface Killah, JAY-Z, Bilal, Souls of Mischief).

The duo’s critically acclaimed score for Season 1 featured influences ranging from David Axelrod, Ennio Morricone, to A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang Clan, which were brought to life in the series and soundtrack.  The musical world created by the composers became a character, infused with hip-hop culture for the show’s Harlem setting.

For the second season, the composers desired to expand the sound and included a rhythm section and orchestra.  For the character Bushmaster (Luke Cage’s nemesis), Muhammad and Younge created what they call “symphonic reggae” for his theme, blending the soul of reggae music with an orchestra.  Their inspirations for Season 2 included the films of Alfred Hitchcock and “Mission Impossible,” plus the television series “Kojak,” “Baretta” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

In addition to the score, the album also includes licensed tracks plus the song “King’s Paradise” performed in an episode by Rakim, regarded as one of the most influential MCs of all time.  The track was written by William Griffin, Younge, and Muhammad.

Also featured in an episode is R&B singer Joi performing “Love You Forever Right Now,” a song she co-wrote with Marlon Cox and Gabrielle Dennis (Tilda Johnson) performing “Family First,” a song co-written by Younge, Muhammad, and Dennis, with vocals produced by Cheo Hodari Coker.  The soundtrack also includes two covers by teen blues guitarist Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, “I Put a Spell on You,” and “The Thrill is Gone.” All songs were composed and produced by Younge and Muhammad.

Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker said, “If Season 1 was about the hip-hop and the Wu-Tangification of the Marvel Universe, Season 2 is about the ROOTS of hip-hop: reggae and the blues.  How both smashed up against each other to create the sonic backdrop of what we now know as hip-hop. The rhythmic stew of funk, rhythm and blues, soul, melded with the Jamaican ‘DJ’ tradition.   Harlem’s Paradise, which is tied to the family legacy of both Mariah Dillard Stokes and John ‘Bushmaster’ McGiver, is where the musical sensibilities of both clash.  One of the secrets of the show is whoever looks down at the club from Cottonmouth’s ‘perch’ controls the music of the club and has reign over Harlem.”

Coker continues, “The music selection and the sequencing is a labor of love, and is one of the most important things I do as showrunner of this show. I love the fact that all of musical sensibilities meld with our storytelling and dramatic desires as a writer’s room, cast, and production crew. I get to be both John Wells and Quincy Jones.”

In Season 2 of the Netflix original series, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain. Marvel’s Luke Cage is rated TV-MA and is streaming now only on Netflix.

Marvel’s Luke Cage Season 2 Original Soundtrack Album will be available for download and at streaming services on June 22. For more information, stay tuned to, @MarvelMusicInc on Twitter, and the official site for Marvel’s Luke Cage for all the updates.

Jon Bernthal Returning To The Walking Dead

Actor Jon Bernthal was spotted with fellow castmates Norman Reedus and Andrew Lincoln around the Georgia area where they shoot The Walking Dead. In fact, TVLine has confirmed that he will indeed return for season 9. This is a big deal to many Walking Dead fans as Bernthal was written off the show of the end of season 2 when he was killed by his best friend Rick (Andrew Lincoln). The rumors suggest that Bernthal will either show up in a flashback before he was killed or a hallucination.

His comeback also coincides with the rumors that Andrew Lincoln is looking to depart the series after next season. So with Bernthal in the picture again it seems likely this rumor will turn out to be true. Because of that AMC is looking to give Norman Reedus a fairly large pay increase and large role in the series to keep him around.

Bernthal’s recent work includes Netflix’s The Punisher and an appearance on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit.

The Walking Dead stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Lennie James, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Austin Amelio, Tom Payne, Xander Berkeley, Khary Payton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
