Weekend Box Office: June 15-17, 2018

This weekend’s box office saw huge success for Pixar’s long-awaited sequel “Incredibles 2”. Opening up in over 4,410 screens, it came in first with a total of $180 million nationally, which is the biggest opening for an animated movie ever. Directed by Brad Bird and voiced by Craig Nelson, Holly Hunter, and Samuel Jackson, this animated superhero movie has been a hit with both fans and reviewers, with a Rotten Tomato score of 95% and an audience score of 89% the overall consensus that it was worth the wait. Overseas the movie brought in $53.1 million which in total brought it to $233 million overall.

In second place was “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter and a whole laundry list of other A-list talent. Being a spinoff of the popular Ocean’s 11, the movie itself saw a 53% decrease in its second weekend, which it brought in a total $19.5 million. The decrease is not surprising as the movie’s Rotten Tomato score was only 67% and an audience score of 49%. Domestically it has seen $79 million so far and worldwide overall $115 million. Though while numbers are low, I expect Warner Bros will do a trilogy of these movies.

Third place was the new rated R movie “Tag” starring  Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner. Opening up in 3,382 theaters, the movie brought in a disappointing $14.6 million in its opening weekend. While the audience and reviewers were mixed with a Rotten Tomato score of only 56% and an audience score of 73%, I expect the drop off to be pretty dramatic next week. The movie based on a true story. The synopsis says “For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade–risking their necks, their job, and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry “You’re It!” This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target.”

In fourth place was “Solo: A Star Wars Story” with $9 million and in fifth place was “Deadpool 2” with $8.8 million. For more information check out www.boxofficemojo.com.

TRAILER: Lucy

Scarlett Johansson turns into a superhuman in the new movie trailer “LUCY”.

Known to many as the “Black Widow” from the Marvel franchise “The Avengers”, Johansson is kicking butt and taking names as she accidentally gains superhuman powers through no fault of her own. The plot is going off that idea that humans only use 10% of their brain. She quickly realizes she is using more than most.

Directed by Luc Besson, who has written for franchises like Transporter and Taken. This will be the first time directing within this type of movie genre. Many know of his work as he was the director of the sci-fi movie “The Fifth Element”. Johansson swings into action on the big screen on August 8, 2014. Until then you can see her this weekend in the new Captain America movie coming out Friday.

Christian Bale works his mojo in the new “American Hustle” trailer

Surrounded by an all-star studded cast, check out Academy Award Winning Actor Christian Bale playing a con man in the new movie trailer American Hustle. Joining him are Academy Award Winner Jennifer Lawrence and Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner. From the get-go, we are traveling back in time with a retro-flashback from the 1970’s era “fashion and hairstyles and once again, an incredible transformation from Bale, who looks to be going bald and gaining a few extra pounds around the waist. Which is a long ways away from playing the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne in the Dark Knight trilogy. The trailer tells the story of Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his very seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) who are forced to work for an FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). who pushes them to turn the tables on other cons, mobsters, and politicians.

Movie fans are getting something of a treat as this is the second movie both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are in together. Many may remember their stunning performance on the big screen in last year’s big hit “Silver Linings Playbook” which was also directed by American hustle’s director David O. Russell. The pressure is on for Russell as this is his follow up movie since the success silver linings last year, which only took one Oscar Award for “actress in a leading role” which Jennifer Lawrence won. American Hustle comes to theaters in limited release on December 13th and released wide on Christmas Day.

Frankenstein Lives!! as Aaron Eckhart

The iconic movie monster from the 1930’s is alive and back on the big screen in an action-packed adaption called “I, Frankenstein”. This version is based on the Darkstorm Studios graphic novel of the same name. Starring Aaron Eckhart, who many remember as the Batman character “Two-Face” in The Dark Knight trilogy, comes off as intelligent and more evolved than a mindless beast. Eckhart looks to be one tough immortal that walks into a war of the damned with angels and gargoyles going at one another. Looking ripped and fit in the trailer, this is Eckhart latest movie since playing the president in the action flick “Olympus Has Fallen”.

The movie also stars the ever beautiful and talented actress Yvonne Strahovski, who many remember from her role as Sarah Walker from the hit tv series “Chuck”. She plays a scientist working to reanimate the dead. The movie also stars British actor Bill Nighy, who has become something a legend when it comes to fantasy films. With movies like “Underworld”, “Wrath of the Titans”, the Harry Potter Series, and “Dr.Who”, Nighy is no strange to these types of projects.

Movie theatergoers have not seen a version of the monster Frankenstein on the big screen for some time. The last anyone saw was in the disastrous and poorly made movie “Van Helsing” in 2004, which was considered a flop at the box office. “I, Frankenstein”  comes to movie theaters January 24, 2014.

Actress Molly Quinn who plays “Alexis Castle” on ABC’s Castle was recently at the “The Wait Is Over! ABC’s Castle Is Back event at The Paley Center. When asked about  I asked about what fans will enjoy the most she said “I hope that they will fall in love with “Pi” as much as Alexis has and I am not thinking that they are. My family was very unhappy about it. I was at a family event and they all came up to me and they were like so what about this new guy you’re dating and of course, I think they are talking about my life and I am like no one and I’m like oh you’re talking about the show. So I hope they eventually warm up to Pi”.

Actor Jon Huertas Confesses! “I am a real nerd at heart”

Actor Jon Huertas who plays Detective Espisoto on ABC’s Castle was at the “The Wait Is Over! ABC’s Castle Is Back event at The Paley Center. In talking about pop culture he confessed that he was once a hard-core nerd.

“I am the only one of the cast that can legitimately say that I was in a D&D Club (Dungeons & Dragons). Some of them probably wouldn’t even know what that is…I’m a real nerd at heart,” said Huertas.

He also talked about his character Detective Esposito and if we get to see him more this season “Yeah there is some stuff coming up with Laney and Esposito that will be on a serious note and with detective Ryan with his wife being pregnant and how will affect their relationship”.

Event: “The Wait Is Over! ABC’s Castle Is Back At The Paley Center

ABC’s hit show “Castle” took over The Paley Center last week in Beverly Hills to celebrate the new season as members of the cast and creative team participated in a special event featuring a lively on-stage conversation, followed by a preview screening for loyal fans and press got a chance to attend. Be warned, if you haven’t caught up on this season already, there are spoilers below.

Andrew Marlowe the Creator & Executive Producer of Castle, If you don’t know the man, go look him up, when asked about what fans will enjoy most this season “I think fans have an expectation to see what’s going to happen with the Castle/Beckett relationship. They finally got engaged and really explore what that engagement means as they head towards the next phase of their relationship and they’ll face the same challenges that any couple who’s gotten engaged have faced and of course it’s filtered through the ‘Castle lens’, so it’s going to be heightened, it’s going to be fun, and it’s going to be dramatic. I think fans can expect more great fun cases in the very much ‘Castle language’ we all know and love”.

Marlowe when on to say, when asked about the character development of each season “Part of our challenge is that everything has to be filtered through a murder investigation. So it’s very hard to do character-based scenes if the murder is moving forward. So you know we would like to give credit to everyone including Castle and Beckett but we also have to tell a procedural. But we’ve enjoyed developing them and we feel every season they get a little richer as they deserve to get”.

Also in attendance was everyone’s favorite detective duo actors Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas. When asked about the Castle and Beckett relationship this season “I think they will enjoy that the two of them finally admitting that they are going to be together forever and the rest of us have to sort out our relationship with that. I think the fans will be very happy that romance is finally sealed and we’re not backtracking with anything”. said Dever.

Huertas followed up by saying “We’re going to see how that affects the precinct. Detectives Ryan and Esposito will definitely get to see their ‘big sister’ moving on to a whole different type of life. I think that is one thing the fans will enjoy the dynamic of the team changing for the better”.

Weekend Box Office: September 27-29, 2013

It was a busy weekend box office again as “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” took number one with $35 million. Starring Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Will Forte. The movie is about Flint Lockwood who now works at The Live Corp Company. But he is forced to leave his job when he learns that his most infamous machine is still operational, and is churning out menacing food-animal hybrids. The sequel is doing about as good as the original did in its second weekend with only a 38% dropoff in attendance. As family friendly as it is, expect to see it in the top ten for some time.

In second place this weekend was “Prisoners” with $11.2 million.

In third place was the new movie “Rush” starring Chris Hemsworth with $10.3 million.

In fourth and fifth place was “Baggage Claim” and “Don John” with $9.3 million and $9 million.

Weekend Box Office: Insidious 2 scares its way to the top with $40.2 million

1. Insidious Chapter 2 – $40.2 million

2. The Family – $14 million
3. Riddick – $6 million
4. Lee Daniel’s The Butler – $5.5 million
5. We’re the Millers – $5.4 million

This weekend only saw two new movies at the theater. Coming in first with a solid $40.2 million was the scary squeal “Insidious Chapter 2“. Which at this rate we can probably expect to see a third coming out next year. In second place was the new Robert De Niro movie “The Family“, which brought in a disappointing $14 million.

In third place and still holding on was “Riddick” with $6 million. Personally I think it got lucky because there weren’t that many new films out. I expect pretty heavy drop off for this film coming next week. In fourth and  fifth place was “Lee Daniel’s The Butler” and “We’re the Millers” with $5.5 million and $5.4 million. For more information about this weekend’s box office numbers check out www.boxofficemojo.com.
