Redbox, Warner Bros. Sign New Agreement

I can’t remember the last time I rented a DVD but Redbox and Warner Bros. today announced a new agreement bringing all new release DVD and Blu-ray Discs titles from Warner Bros. to Redbox kiosks the same day as their retail sell-through dates. The agreement also maintains new-release and catalog availability via Redbox On Demand at first release.

“We’re thrilled to announce this day-and-date agreement with Warner Bros. that provides the consistently strong slate of Warner Bros. titles to consumers at their earliest physical retail sell-through availability,” said Galen Smith, CEO of Redbox. “We appreciate the partnership with Warner Bros. in making their content accessible to Americans – whether for rental or purchase, on disc or On Demand.”

“Warner Bros. is pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Redbox,” said Mike Takac, EVP of Sales, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. “We’re aligned in our mutual goal of satisfying consumer demand for Warner Bros. content – in any format, across platforms.”

What’s interesting is that there are 41,500 Redbox kiosks and has more locations than Starbucks and McDonlands in the U.S. combined.

Upcoming new-releases from Warner Bros. include Rampage (July 17) and Ready Player One (July 24).

U.S. Department of Justice Clears Disney Acquisition of 21st Century Fox

Good news for the people watching the Disney/21st Century Fox merger. The Walt Disney Company announced today that the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice has cleared the pending acquisition by Disney of Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. Which is a great step in the process for Disney to buy Fox.

The DOJ has entered into a consent decree with Disney and 21st Century Fox that allows the acquisition to proceed while requiring the sale of the Fox Sports Regional Networks. Under the consent decree, Disney will have at least 90 days from the date of closing the transaction to complete this sale, with the possibility that the DOJ can grant extensions of time up to another 90 days. The decree is subject to the normal court approval process.

Personally, I can’t wait for this sale to be final. There are so many franchises in the Fox sandbox for Disney to play with and to really do some amazing stuff with each of them.

So say it with me. One step closer to the X-Men jumping into the MCU with The Avengers!

Taco Bell’s Nacho Fries Are Coming Back To honor The 25th Anniversary Of Warner Bros. Pictures Film “Demolition Man”

After making their debut at Taco Bell stores this past January, Nacho Fries are back for a summer sequel, returning to menus on July 12. To celebrate their return, Taco Bell will honor the 25th Anniversary of Warner Bros. Pictures’ action sci-fi film Demolition Man and its prediction of a utopian future where “all restaurants are Taco Bell,” with a re-creation of the iconic restaurant from the movie.

“When you create a fake trailer for a fake movie for a real product that surpasses all expectations of products (and movie trailers), it seems inevitable that you have to create a sequel,” said Marisa Thalberg, Chief Brand Officer of Taco Bell Corp. “And what better way to tease this sequel, than pay homage to a real movie’s 25th anniversary – one that had a very compelling view of a fictional future?”

Demolition Man, a 1993 Warner Bros. Pictures’ cult-classic in its own right, gained fame for its utopian predictions of 2032 – where Taco Bell was the only restaurant to survive the Franchise Wars.

Leading up to the July 12 return of Nacho Fries, answers will be revealed with exciting creative in the sequel to Web of Fries I. Culminating with a Demolition Man pop-up and a futuristic and upscale Taco Bell dining experience July 19 – 21 in San Diego just outside the holy-grail of science fiction.

TRAILER: The Predator

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for The Predator. Directed by Shane Black starring Yvonne Strahovski, Olivia Munn,  Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, Boyd Holbrook, and a laundry list of other big names.

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

I am glad they released a new trailer as their first teaser did not make the movie look that great. But after this trailer and taking a look at their IMDB page with all the actors who are starring in it. I can’t help get excited to see this movie now.

Though I should give Director Shane Black more credit as he wrote movies like Last Action Hero, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Nice Guys. That alone should give him enough street credibility to create a legit Predator movie and plus he was in the original 1987 Predator movie. Which made a successful, considered back then, $98 million worldwide and went on to make a franchise out of it.

Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think in the comment section.

REVIEW – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Like many of us who grew up watching the original Jurassic Park on the big screen back in 1993 and the two others that followed it, it was a no-brainer to go see the sequel to 2015 movie Jurassic World. Before I go any further, spoilers will be written. So continue at your own risk.

Overview;

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom jumps forward in time three years after the park was closed down after all the dinosaurs escaped and caused havoc on park goers.  The park has been abandoned and the world has found out that the island, Isla Nublar, where are the animals live, has an active volcano that is going to erupt any moment that will destroy all life on the island. The question on the mainland has been brought to the US Government if they should or should not save the animals. The short answer is no, with a little convincing from Dr. Ian Malcolm who gives a spectacular speech in testifying before Congress.  Owen (Chris Pratt) and Clair (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to the island through private funding of a company that wants to save the animals, in particular, “Blue” the raptor that Owen raise since birth. But not all is what it seems. Cue the running, screaming and jumping for their lives and all heck breaks loose until the end of the movie.

What I Liked About It;

Once again the Jurassic Park franchise delivers the one thing everyone wants to see, people running away from dinosaurs. The franchise has come along way since the first one but the constant has been being able to see these huge creatures on the big screen and being blown away by their movie magic. What is great is that they raise the bar with each movie that is created. So while you get the same idea, you walk into the theater knowing that you’ll see something amazingly new.

Reprising their roles is both Chris Pratt as Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing. Both once again bring their A game to the big screen. Between their banter back and forth to the running away from the dinosaurs, you can not argue that they are both amazing at their craft. I mean you have to be good at convincing people that you are actually screaming bloody murder at a dinosaur that is trying to eat you.

The supporting cast was just as brilliant. Actors Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda, while not household names yet, they went toe to toe with both Pratt and Howard and were just as good. Also in the supporting cast was Toby Jones and Ted Levine who both can and have played great villain roles. The movie also had acting royalty with a supporting role from Academy Award Nominees James Cromwell and Jeff Goldblum. While their parts were fairly short both were memorable. But the breakout star I think was Isabella Sermon who played Maisie Lockwood. It takes a certain type person, heck even a kid at her age, to be able to act off that many incredible actors and not be forgotten. What’s more interesting, from her IMDB page, this seems to be her first acting role.

What I Think Didn’t Work;

I liked everything about the movie except the script and overall story. The action and acting was great but the story didn’t feel natural to what we have seen in the past from the franchise.  I mean really, I get cloned dinosaurs, but a cloned human with possible dino DNA? Really it’s when they get off the island and back to the mainland and the second part of the movie starts that felt extremely rushed with the pacing, even though the dinos were loose and chasing everyone.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a horrible movie, just not my favorite within the Jurassic Park franchise. Which makes question are we getting desensitized to awesome movies? The bar keeps getting raised with bigger special effects, bigger explosions, over the top action sequences.

Overall;

While I enjoyed it a whole lot, you aren’t missing out on anything if you don’t see it on the big screen. Really check it out when it comes to VOD or cable.

TRAILER: The Equalizer 2

Columbia Pictures has released a new Equalizer 2 trailer and it’s even more intense. Denzel Washington is reprising his role as Robert McCall who has settled into a new life as a Lyft driver. That is until someone needs his help, as seen in the trailer.

The sequel finds Robert out for blood in avenging the death of his former colleague and friend played by actress Melissa Leo who made an appearance in the 2014 original movie. While the original movie’s Rotten Tomato score was only 60% and an audience score of 76%, the movie was considered a huge success as it made $192 million worldwide on a budget of only $55 million.

What should be exciting for moviegoers is the supporting cast Ashton Sanders, Bill Pullman, and Pedro Pascal, who many know from Game of Thrones, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Narcos, and is currently filming Wonder Woman 1984.

The Equalizer 2 comes out on July 20. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think in the comment section.

Weekend Box Office: June 22-24, 2018

The dinos reign supreme this weekend at the box office as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom takes the top spot with $150 million domestically. Not even movie reviewers could keep the audience away as the movie has a Rotten Tomato score of 50% and an audience score of 61%. Overseas Jurassic World has made over $711.5 million and rising as the movie has not opened up in Japan year. So expect to see it hit the billion dollar movie club within a few weeks.

In second place was Disney’s Incredibles 2 with a respectful $80.9 million in its second weekend. While the drop off was 55.7%, the movie has made $350 million domestically and $485 million worldwide so far. I don’t see Disney not coming out with an Incredibles 3 after successful numbers like these.

In third place was Ocean’s 8 with $11.7 million. I doubt it will see Ocean’s 8 in the top five next weekend as the drop off this weekend was 38.6%.

In fourth and fifth place were Tag and Deadpool 2 with $8.2 million and $5.2 million.
