Weekend Box Office: April 19-21, 2019

It was a slow Easter weekend at movie theaters as Warner Bros and New Line’s The Curse of La Llorona took the top spot with only $26.5 million. This actually topped the expectations of the movie as moviegoers are looking for new horror movies that raise the bar. This, in turn, gave both studios their third straight weekend at the number one spot.

In second place was Warner Bro’s Shazam! with $17.3 million. So far worldwide it’s made $322 million and it’s only on its third week. I expect the number to hit somewhere between $350 and $400 by the time it’s done. Simply because Avenger’s Endgame is coming out this next weekend and will dominate the charts for some time.

Third place saw Fox’s Breakthrough with $11.1 million. While fourth and fifth place saw Captain Marvel and Little with $9.1 million and $8.4 million. Check out the full top ten list below.

  1. The Curse of La Llorona – $26,505,000
  2. Shazam! – $17,340,000
  3. Breakthrough – $11,100,000
  4. Captain Marvel – $9,100,000
  5. Little – $8,451,000
  6. Dumbo – $6,800,000
  7. Pet Sematary – $4,850,000
  8. Missing Link – $4,369,756
  9. Us – $4,264,000
  10. Hellboy – $3,880,000

REVIEW – Funny Story

I will be honest, I am a huge fan of the actress Emily Bett Rickards and it was a big reason that I went to the Los Angeles premiere of the film Funny Story. I really had no idea what I was walking into with the plotline, though what I got was an amazing story that is both tragically funny and deeply saddening.

Overview;

Directed by Michael J. Gallagher, the film is a tragic comedy about a well-intentioned father Walter, played by actor Mathew Glave,  who inadvertently wreaks havoc on the life of his estranged daughter Nic, played by actress Jana Winternitz and her partner Kim, played by Emily Bett Rickards.

The basic story is that Walter is looking to rekindle his relationship with his daughter Nic by spending the weekend with her. She tells him that she can’t visit him because she’s going with a group of friends to a resort in Big Sur. Walter asks if he can join them. She reluctantly agrees. On the way, she asks him to pick up her friend Kim to bring with him. What he doesn’t know and finds out when arriving is that his daughter and all of her friends are lesbians and that Nic and Kim are a couple who are planning to get married that same weekend

Through a laundry list of questionable actions and decisions made by Walter, the overall question asked from the story is if you knew a secret that would ruin somebody’s life, would you tell them? This becomes his conflict through a series of hilarious and awkward encounters he has with his daughter, partner, and group of friends that he comes to know for the weekend.

What I Liked About It;

I really didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Director Michael J. Gallagher did a brilliant job at making you feel as is you were a part of the film in such a way as if you were overhearing someone else’s story or conversation. Which is why it was both funny, sad, and sometimes awkward to watch as if maybe you shouldn’t be watching this deep and very personal story about this group of people. The last movie that had that feeling for me was Director David O. Russell’s movie Silver Linings Playbook starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Actor Mathew Glave brought this amazing fine line between humor and tragic figure throughout the entire movie. His work was absolutely amazing in this role. Though it’s not surprising as he’s a seasoned actor who’s been on shows like ER, Stargate SG-1,  Army Wives, and Angie Tribeca. Looking at his IMDB page, he has a wide range of roles that are all across the spectrum. I firmly believe if it was anyone else in the role, the movie would not have been as good as it is.

After seeing Emily Bett Rickards in this movie I can honestly say she is underused on the CW’s Arrow. If she and her team are about to make some business moves then I can see why she jumped ship for next season.  I think Hollywood is about to see how truly talented she is. Her performance in this movie wasn’t just brilliant, it was real. You could feel the emotions she put into every scene.

What I Think Didn’t Work;

If anything it left you with questions at the end. But maybe that’s a good thing? It forces you to use your imagination and create a whole new story in your head in how you think the story ended.

Overall;

If are looking for something completely different when it comes to your movie preference, then I would highly recommend Funny Story. Great acting, great story, it’s well worth checking out. Weekend Box Office: July 13-15, 2018

Family-friendly movies always rule the box office and this weekend is no different with Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation with $44.1 million. Voice acting from Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg, this is the third movie of the franchise. This this the weakest opening of the three movies as the last one made $47.5 million in its opening weekend, while the original made $42.5 million. Though overall it is a profitable franchise for Sony as both previous films in total have made $318 million. That’s not including DVD, OnDemand sales, and toy merchandise. Though I expect it will fall to the number two or three spot next week as the new action movie Equalizer 2 movie opens up. Plus it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 60% and an audience score of 55%.

In second place is Marvel’s Ant-Man And The Wasp with $28.8 million. So far in its second weekend, it has made $132.8 million domestically and $283 worldwide so far. While it was loved by both critics and audiences alike, the movie is already seeing a drop off with 62% at theaters. Though this is to be expected as we are right in the middle of the summer with big movies coming out every weekend.

In third place and opening up in its first weekend is The Rock’s new movie Skyscraper with $25.5 million. The movie received a “B+” from CinemaScore, though critics aren’t really in love with the film as it received a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Universal is going to have to do something at foreign box offices as the movie had a budget of $125 million. So far it’s opened in 57 international markets this weekend and will open in 11 additional ones next weekend, which including Italy and China.

In fourth place and still holding on strong is Disney and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 with $16.2 million. In its fourth weekend, the movie is still breaking records. Besides being the highest grossing animated film of all-time domestically, this past weekend it jumped ahead of The Dark Knight to become the ninth largest overall film all time domestically. Also with this past weekend, the movie has made over $856 million, making it the 64th largest worldwide release of all-time.

In fifth place was Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with $15.5 million. So far domestically it has made $363.3 million and worldwide it’s seen $1.134 billion. Making it the 18th largest worldwide release of all-time and rising.
