Apparently TV Sets Still Dominate Video Entertainment, Accounting for More Than 50% of all Video Consumed

New research came out from Parks Associates that finds TV sets still dominate home entertainment, accounting for over one-half of all video consumed by US broadband households each week. Plus 360 View: Digital Media and Connected Consumers reveals consumers report spending on average nearly 20 hours per week watching video on a TV, compared to nearly four hours on a mobile phone. Consumers also increased the total amount of time spent watching video from 2018 to 2019, a 33% increase in hours spent per week in video viewing.

This doesn’t surprise me much as TVs are becoming less expensive to buy. People now can buy a 55inch, 4K, smart TV for less than $500. By having a smart TV at home, you can basically do everything a phone can.

“Understanding consumers is key to driving acquisition and minimizing churn among video services,” said Steve Nason, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates. “Different demographics show markedly different attitudes and preferences. NPS scores for Netflix are higher among women, while NPS scores for premium OTT services such as Starz, Showtime, and HBO Now are higher among men. Younger video consumers represent the future of the industry, but their programming and platform preferences are distinct from older segments, which puts traditional pay-TV providers in a difficult position. Changing the traditional pay-TV service model could alienate older, high-ARPU customers, but not changing could doom future prospects.”

The research also found that consumers ages 18-24 watch as much video on a computer as they do on a TV set (approximately 16 hours per week). One-half of US broadband households subscribe to Netflix. Amazon Prime Video is a distant second with a 38% adoption rate. One-fifth of broadband households use the free version of streaming music service Pandora and Consumers 18-34 spend nearly five hours per week listening to podcasts.

Netflix Sweeps 47th Annie Awards

Netflix was the big winner at the 47th Annual Annie Awards last Saturday evening, garnering top honors in 18 categories, including Best Feature – Klaus; Best Feature – Independent – I Lost My Body; Character Animation in an Animated Feature – Sergio Martins for Klaus; Character Design in an Animated Television/Media Production – Keiko Murayama for Carmen Sandiego; Directing in An Animated Feature – Sergio Pablos for Klaus; Music in an Animated Television/Media Production – Rob Cairns for Love, Death & Robots; Writing in an Animated Feature – I Lost My Body; and Editorial in an Animated Feature – Klaus.

I have to admit the only thing I have seen in that list above was Love, Death & Robots, which was brilliant. Now I am curious to see Netflix’s other animated content.

For those who don’t know what the The Annie Awards are, they honor overall excellence as well as individual achievement in a total of 36 different categories from best feature, best feature – independent, production design, character animation, and effects animation to storyboarding, writing, music, editing and voice acting, and have often been a predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Ride Opens at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride is now open at Disneyland Park in California, adding to the immersive adventures inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The ride brings guests into the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance, including a face off with Kylo Ren. The journey takes guests aboard a full-size transport shuttle and then into a nearby Star Destroyer on a thrilling adventure that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. One of the most immersive, ambitious and technologically advanced experiences in Disney history, the attraction uses multiple ride systems working together to create a seamless story on a cinematic scale.

I am probably one of the few who haven’t been to Star Wars land yet. Though I expect there are other like me. Personally I am just waiting for things to calm down and then I will go enjoy it. For more information about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, visit,, and

Weekend Box Office: April 19-21, 2019

It was a slow Easter weekend at movie theaters as Warner Bros and New Line’s The Curse of La Llorona took the top spot with only $26.5 million. This actually topped the expectations of the movie as moviegoers are looking for new horror movies that raise the bar. This, in turn, gave both studios their third straight weekend at the number one spot.

In second place was Warner Bro’s Shazam! with $17.3 million. So far worldwide it’s made $322 million and it’s only on its third week. I expect the number to hit somewhere between $350 and $400 by the time it’s done. Simply because Avenger’s Endgame is coming out this next weekend and will dominate the charts for some time.

Third place saw Fox’s Breakthrough with $11.1 million. While fourth and fifth place saw Captain Marvel and Little with $9.1 million and $8.4 million. Check out the full top ten list below.

  1. The Curse of La Llorona – $26,505,000
  2. Shazam! – $17,340,000
  3. Breakthrough – $11,100,000
  4. Captain Marvel – $9,100,000
  5. Little – $8,451,000
  6. Dumbo – $6,800,000
  7. Pet Sematary – $4,850,000
  8. Missing Link – $4,369,756
  9. Us – $4,264,000
  10. Hellboy – $3,880,000

REVIEW – Funny Story

I will be honest, I am a huge fan of the actress Emily Bett Rickards and it was a big reason that I went to the Los Angeles premiere of the film Funny Story. I really had no idea what I was walking into with the plotline, though what I got was an amazing story that is both tragically funny and deeply saddening.

Directed by Michael J. Gallagher, the film is a tragic comedy about a well-intentioned father Walter, played by actor Mathew Glave,  who inadvertently wreaks havoc on the life of his estranged daughter Nic, played by actress Jana Winternitz and her partner Kim, played by Emily Bett Rickards.

The basic story is that Walter is looking to rekindle his relationship with his daughter Nic by spending the weekend with her. She tells him that she can’t visit him because she’s going with a group of friends to a resort in Big Sur. Walter asks if he can join them. She reluctantly agrees. On the way, she asks him to pick up her friend Kim to bring with him. What he doesn’t know and finds out when arriving is that his daughter and all of her friends are lesbians and that Nic and Kim are a couple who are planning to get married that same weekend

Through a laundry list of questionable actions and decisions made by Walter, the overall question asked from the story is if you knew a secret that would ruin somebody’s life, would you tell them? This becomes his conflict through a series of hilarious and awkward encounters he has with his daughter, partner, and group of friends that he comes to know for the weekend.

What I Liked About It;

I really didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Director Michael J. Gallagher did a brilliant job at making you feel as is you were a part of the film in such a way as if you were overhearing someone else’s story or conversation. Which is why it was both funny, sad, and sometimes awkward to watch as if maybe you shouldn’t be watching this deep and very personal story about this group of people. The last movie that had that feeling for me was Director David O. Russell’s movie Silver Linings Playbook starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Actor Mathew Glave brought this amazing fine line between humor and tragic figure throughout the entire movie. His work was absolutely amazing in this role. Though it’s not surprising as he’s a seasoned actor who’s been on shows like ER, Stargate SG-1,  Army Wives, and Angie Tribeca. Looking at his IMDB page, he has a wide range of roles that are all across the spectrum. I firmly believe if it was anyone else in the role, the movie would not have been as good as it is.

After seeing Emily Bett Rickards in this movie I can honestly say she is underused on the CW’s Arrow. If she and her team are about to make some business moves then I can see why she jumped ship for next season.  I think Hollywood is about to see how truly talented she is. Her performance in this movie wasn’t just brilliant, it was real. You could feel the emotions she put into every scene.

What I Think Didn’t Work;

If anything it left you with questions at the end. But maybe that’s a good thing? It forces you to use your imagination and create a whole new story in your head in how you think the story ended.

If are looking for something completely different when it comes to your movie preference, then I would highly recommend Funny Story. Great acting, great story, it’s well worth checking out. Learn more about the movie at it’s website here and check out a click from the movie below.
